ART HISTORY
The wing forming the Museum’s southeast corner, facing Fifth Avenue at 80th Street, was the last part built of the originally conceived architectural master plan. Its construction began in 1904 by the prominent New York firm McKim, Mead, and White, a leading exponent of the neoclassical style during the early twentieth century. The exterior was completed by 1917, but the interiors, for the display of Roman art, were only fitted out between 1922 and 26, after World War I. The Roman Court’s elegant black-and-white floor mosaics were inspired by examples at Hadrian’s villa in Tivoli.
