DESCRIPTION
The delicate design for the Museum's Blue Soirée Earrings was inspired by an American adaptation of an original European necklace from about the turn of the twentieth century. Iron jewelry was popular in Germany, Austria, and France until the mid-century, as quantities were exported to France, England, Scandinavia, and the United States. Our earrings are decorated with blue crystals, and have a vintage appeal.

ART HISTORY
The Royal Prussian Iron Foundry, which in 1804 began the production of garden furniture and fences as well as candelabra, bowls, vases, plaques, and medallions, soon began to produce jewelry as well. Originally intended to be worn only for mourning, the jewelry, much of it lacquered black, became popular during the 1812–14 Prussian War of Liberation, when people were encouraged to donate their precious metals to the state to help finance the war effort; they were given iron jewelry in return.
