A holiday favorite for more than forty years, The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Christmas Tree is adorned with resplendent angels and surrounded by magnificent crèche figures, including shepherds, animals, kings, and the Holy Family. Now, you can bring this beloved tradition into your home with the Metropolitan Museum’s 3D Advent calendar. Art History
Created in eighteenth-century Naples by leading sculptors of the late Baroque era, the angels and crèche figures are made of painted terracotta, finely carved wood, exquisite fabrics, and other materials. The Museum owes its collection of crèche figures to the generosity of Loretta Hines Howard, who supervised its yearly installation from the time of her gift in 1964 until her death in 1982. Her family continues her good work.
