ART HISTORY
Limiting his subject matter to women, especially dancers, and to horses, Edgar Degas (French, 1834–1917) sculpted many variations of each figure in different poses in order to explore the dynamics of movement. Horse racing was one of Degas's lifelong interests, and he frequented the Longchamps racetrack to study thoroughbreds in action and in leisure in order to perfectly capture their grace and beauty in his art. The original Horse at Trough is now in the Museum's collection.DESCRIPTION
