Ancient Theban tombs, revealed. Our exclusive scarf features an original photo by Harry Burton (British, 18791940), reproduced from the archives of the Mets Department of Egyptian Art. Beginning in 1906, the Museums Egyptian Expedition conducted excavations at several sites, including western Thebes, opposite the modern city of Luxor. One of the richest archaeological sites in the world, the Theban necropolis contains hundreds of decorated tombs. Burton was hired in 1914 to photograph tomb interiors and later the work of the Museum's excavation team, rapidly gaining a reputation as the finest archaeological photographer of his time. His sense of artistry resulted in images of haunting beauty and mystery such as this one, made about 1926.
