Description

In 1905, the Wiener Werksttte (Vienna Workshops) began producing printed and woven textiles, many designed by artists such as the Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt (18621918). For nearly 30 years, the workshops produced refined and graphically elegant designs, distinctive in their use of flat shapes and bold colors and often incorporating geometric and floral motifs. Our eye-catching bangle is based on an original printed textile (ca. 1920) in the Museums collection that was designed by Klimt.

Silver overlay, with printed lacquer. Slip-on styling. 3/4''W; inner circumference: 8''.

Art History

In 1903, the Wiener Werksttte (Vienna Workshops) was founded as a designers cooperative based on the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, which strove to provide a wide range of well-designed, often handmade products for a sophisticated audience. Its rectilinear, functional stylebased on meticulous proportion and restrained detailwas seen as an antidote to excessively ornate traditional forms.
