Description

The splendid portrait Matilda Stoughton de Jaudenes by Gilbert Stuart (American, 17551828) shows the 16-year-old bride of Spanish diplomat Josef de Judenes y Nebot. Matilda Stoughton was an American whose father served as Spains consul in Boston for 30 years. This image, along with her husbands companion portrait in the Metropolitan Museum, both painted in 1794, are superb examples of Stuarts firm, brilliant style just after his return to the U.S. from England. Although Matildas fashionable costume and jewelry would have been considered excessive for a young Anglo-Saxon, the splendor was completely appropriate for the wife of an ambitious diplomat in the new American republic. Our dramatic cuff is adapted from a large oval bracelet and a sumptuous brooch shown in Stuarts portrait.

22K gold overlay, with dyed howlite and simulated glass pearls. 2''W; inner circumference: 6''.
