Throughout her influential career, designer Miriam Haskell (American, 1899–1981) created some of the most elegant, high-quality costume jewelry in the U.S. Today, her creations are still made entirely by hand. At the heart of each piece is an intricate filigree backing that is separately plated, assembled, and meticulously embellished. The tight embroidery of each bead, crystal, and pearl, with no sign of the base underneath, is characteristic of Miriam Haskell jewelry. Colors and materials are chosen for their sophistication, often used in asymmetrical compositions. This beautiful bracelet, made for the Metropolitan Museum, was hand- assembled in the U.S.

Art History

Miriam Haskell (American, 1899–1981) opened her first boutique, Le Bijou de l’Heure, in New York in 1926. Her glamorous clients included Joan Crawford, Lucille Ball, the Duchess of Windsor, and the fashionable society women of her day. Vintage examples of her jewelry are highly coveted by collectors, and distinctive pieces from the 1920s to the 1970s are represented in The Costume Institute at the Museum.
