This CD features the sacred music of twelfth-century poet-composer Hildegard von Bingen (German, 1098–1179), performed by Anonymous 4, a group of four women who combine musical, literary, and historical scholarship to create innovative concert programs interweaving music with poetry and narrative. Abbess Hildegard wrote seven liturgical works around the feast of St. Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins to be sung by the nuns of her convent, who possessed relics of the saint and her handmaidens from the site of their legendary martyrdom in nearby Cologne.
