This musical compilation features a range of vocal and instrumental works from medieval manuscripts. The faint dots, lines, and markings from ancient texts have been transformed into fine sounds, and like medieval poetry, the music is infused with symbolism and a sense of grandeur. "Angelus ad virginem," as Chaucer described, is performed with young voices delicately accompanied by a plucked psaltery. "Summer is icumen in" uses sweet voices and the rousing trills of tambourines to express joy and prosperity to come. With performances by the Serendipity Choir, the Monks and Novices of St. Frideswide, and the Oxford Girls' Choir, this CD captures the spirit of medieval life.
