Description

A holiday favorite for more than forty years, The Metropolitan Museum of Arts annual Christmas tree evokes the splendor, mystery, and humanity of the Yuletide season. Each year, the tree stands in the Museums Medieval Sculpture Hall surrounded by scored of handmade Baroque crche figures. In celebration of art, Christmas, and music, beloved carols and canticles are played on recordings or sung at concerts given next to the tree, and are the inspiration for this compilation. The recordings of Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring and In Dulcio Jubilo featured on the compilation were played by Metropolitan Museums Concerts and Lectures Series artist Martin Souter on an Appleton pipe organ (Boston, ca. 1830) from the Museums collection.
