Art History

Created in eighteenth-century Naples by leading sculptors of the late Baroque era, the Museum’s crèche figures are made of painted terracotta, finely carved wood, exquisite fabrics, and other materials. The Holy Family is framed not by a stable but by a setting of columns inspired by a Roman temple ruin. Some say that the figures of exotic travelers and kings symbolize the nations of the world who paid homage to the Christ Child.
