Art History

The Wiener Werkstätte, or Viennese Workshops, was founded by designers Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser in 1903, amid the excitement and vitality of turn-of-the- century Vienna. Their goal was to make work by fine craftsmen equivalent to that of fine artists. The Wiener Werkstätte promoted progressive designs based on meticulous proportions and restrained detail, and executed objects with refined handiwork. More than a hundred artisans were employed by the Wiener Werkstätte in the early twentieth century, producing such products as tablewares in glass and metal, ceramics, leather goods, textiles, furniture, jewelry, and graphic designs.
