For more than 40 years, the Museum has created a new and different sparkling silver snowflake ornament. Our 2013 Snowflake Christmas Ornament is adapted from the rich floral pattern on a seventeenth-century Turkish textile in the Museum’s collection. Originally used as a yastik
(cushion cover), the silk textile features a design of silver rosettes over a voided velvet ground. Within the rosettes, carnations and leaves radiate from eight-pointed “snowflake” designs—the basis for our stunning ornament—while pomegranates adorn the interstices. Opulent fabrics of this type were widely used in the Ottoman court.
