Description

The Museums 2014 Star Ornament is based on a decorative design in LOrnement Polychrome, a book of chromolithographs in the Museums collection, originally published in Paris in 1869. The basis for our star ornament is an interlaced design taken from a color plate of Middle Eastern geometric motifs.

The Museums 2014 Snowflake Ornament is based on the medallion upholstery on a French-style chaise gondole made in 1837 in the workshop of Duncan Phyfe (17701854).

The Metropolitan Museums Annual Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crche showcases our collection of beautiful eighteenth-century crche figures. The 2014 Angel Tree Ornament is based on an original angel from this vivid Neapolitan Nativity scene.

Art History

LOrnement Polychrome is a vivid compendium by artist Albert Charles Auguste Racinet (French, 18251893), which presents some 2,000 patterns from cultures around the world, adapted from a wide variety of sources.

During the first four decades of the nineteenth century, Duncan Phyfe (17701854) was the acknowledged leader in the New York furniture trade. Renowned for his elegant Neoclassical designs and superior craftsmanship, Phyfe remains to this day Americas most famous cabinetmaker.

The crafting of Christmas crches originated as a devotional practice in Europe in the Middle Ages. The custom of creating large crches with a multitude of figures was already well established in Naples when Charles III of Bourbon became king in 1734. During his reign, Christmas crches became increasingly elaborate; hundreds of figures and innovations were added, and the most gifted sculptors of Naples lent their talents to the task.
