The crafting of Christmas crèches began in the Middle Ages as a devotional practice in Europe. The custom of creating large crèches was already well established in Naples when Charles III of Bourbon became king in 1734. During his reign, Christmas crèches became increasingly elaborate; hundreds of figures and innovations were added, and Naples' most gifted sculptors lent their talents to the task. Today, the yearly installation of the Christmas tree is a cherished tradition at The Met.
