Description

Description

Our collectible ornament depicts a beautiful 18th-century angel from the Museum's Annual Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crche. This vivid Nativity scene presents a group of enchanting crche figures created in Naples, including a host of elegantly robed angels suspended in adoration above the Holy Family.

The crafting of Christmas crches began in the Middle Ages as a devotional practice in Europe. The custom of creating large crches was already well established in Naples when Charles III of Bourbon became king in 1734. During his reign, Christmas crches became increasingly elaborate; hundreds of figures and innovations were added, and Naples' most gifted sculptors lent their talents to the task. Today, the yearly installation of the Christmas tree is a cherished tradition at The Met.
