This year's snowflake is based on a plate in Snow Crystals in The Met collection, published in 1931. The book features the photographs of Wilson A. Bentley (American, 1865–1931), who in 1885 became the first person to capture an individual snowflake on film. Bentley photographed more than 5,000 snow crystals with a bellows camera fitted with a microscope.
This year's radiant star was inspired by a beautiful stained-glass medallion in The Met Cloisters. This precious piece (ca. 1320) was originally part of a window in the Church of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Brice, France. Our ornament showcases the medallion's elegant six-pointed foliate star and central four- petaled flower.
