Art History

The crafting of Christmas crches originated as a devotional practice in Europe in the Middle Ages. The custom of creating large crches with a multitude of figures was already well established in Naples when Charles III of Bourbon became king in 1734. Partly because of the kings special interest in the practice, and partly due to the general revival of all the arts in Naples during his reign, the creation of crche figures gathered momentum. The most gifted sculptors of Naples were asked to lend their talents to the task. Crches became increasingly elaborate as hundreds of figures and innovations were added.
