Description

Description

The pineapple embossed on our stationery is adapted from a late-eighteenth-century French ormolu furniture mount in The Met collection. The term ormolu refers to a type of gilt-bronze ornamentation frequently seen on Rococo and Neoclassical furniture produced in eighteenth-century France. Ormolu mounts served as both protection and decoration for the fine furniture so highly valued in bourgeois and aristocratic homes.

The pineapple is believed to have originated in southern Brazil. To the Carib Indians of the West Indies it symbolized hospitality and welcome. In 1493, Columbus brought the fruit back from Guadeloupe to Spain as a gift for his royal patrons. In eighteenth-century Europe, the pineapple was esteemed as a highly exotic and rare delicacy, and its popularity as both a fruit and an emblem of hospitality spread from Europe to colonial North America.
