Art History

Etruscan civilization, centered in the region of Italy now known as Tuscany, flourished between the seventh and fourth centuries B.C. The wealthy, cosmopolitan, and luxury-loving Etruscans developed some of the finest gold, silver, and bronze jewelry of the ancient world. Although the basic jewelry-making techniques were first discovered by Near Eastern metalsmiths, the Etruscans refined and perfected them to produce spectacular works. Etruscan jewelry was used extensively by women, men, children, and even pet animals. In most cases, jewelry was not only ornamental but also served to indicate social status and even to protect the wearer from harm.
