Watches crafted in the shape of human skulls were a specialty of early 17th-century Geneva, a prominent center of Protestant watchmaking at the time. One Geneva master, Jacques Sermand (1595–1651), was well known for his skull watches as well as timepieces in such shapes as tulip buds, crosses, and stars.
His apprentice Isaac Penard (Swiss, 1619–76) provided the movement (ca. 1650) for a silver skull watch, now in The Met collection. The watch dial, which is engraved and filled with niello, is accessed by opening the skull's lower jaw. Our cuff links are adapted from this intriguing timepiece.
