The original mask is too small and brittle to have served as an actual theater mask; such Egyptian faience examples are known only from burials as offerings to Osiris/Dionysus. But it recalls previous centuries when nearly every ancient Greek and Roman city of note had an open-air theater. By the fifth century B.C., theatrical masks had developed as standard types, recognizable immediately to the audience when the actors wearing them came onstage.
