The tin-glazed earthenware known as maiolica reveals much about the culture and spirit of Renaissance Italy. Spectacularly colorful, these magnificent objects were generally made for use rather than decoration and present a fascinating glimpse into daily life.
This handsome jar was reproduced exclusively for The Met by Sbigoli Terrecotte, a venerable Florentine workshop. It is based on a pair of tin-glazed earthenware pharmacy jars in The Met collection, which were originally made in Florence about 1440–70.
