Description
The dramatic Manhattan skyline is familiar to millions. This handsome new case holding two sleek pens provides the perfect backdrop for a detail of a 1933 photograph in the Museum’s collection, titled Financial District, from the Hotel Bossert, by architectural photographer Samuel H. Gottscho (American, 1875–1971).
Art History
The city was one of Samuel H. Gottscho's (American, 1875–1971) most common subjects, and this photograph is particularly masterful. It is a panoramic view of downtown New York, dramatically lighted, with the low waterfront buildings of Brooklyn in the foreground and the great towers of Manhattan rising in the background.
