Between 1911 and 1914, Margaret Neilson Armstrong (American, 1867–1944) journeyed through the western United States with a group of intrepid female friends; these travels resulted in her 1915 Field Book of Western Wild Flowers
, featuring more than 500 of her botanical drawings. Our enchanting earrings are based on Armstrong’s original illustration of a Bush Poppy (Dendromecon rigida
), now in the Museum’s collection. Delicately delineated in watercolor and brown ink over graphite, it is inscribed “Montecito, Cal., June 6, 1912.”
