A lavish pin-pendant with chain in the Museum’s collection was produced in New York City about 1905–15. This versatile adornment showcases a large, oval ruby surrounded by glittering diamonds. The detachable pendant can be worn alone as a pin, or it can hang from the chain, embellished with a tassel set with more diamonds. An American heiress known for her generosity to the Metropolitan Museum (and other cultural institutions) was the original owner of this luxurious piece; its elegance and bejeweled glamour would have complemented the period’s unstructured fashions. Our enchanting earrings are based on the original's glittering design.
