The tradition of portrait miniature painting in America was adapted from European models. The Museum’s important miniatures collection includes a gold locket framing a portrait of an eye done in watercolor on ivory. Painted about 1930 by Emily Drayton Taylor (American, 1860–1952), this delicate work harks back to “lover’s eye” miniatures of the eighteenth–nineteenth century. Our American Memento Pendant Earrings have been adapted from the locket’s frame.
