Art History

The roots of classical Southeast Asian art lie in historical contacts with India, which influenced the cultures of Southeast Asia for centuries. Between the eighth and the thirteenth century, the majority of the works that comprise the classical tradition in Indonesia were produced in Central and Eastern Java. Due to its position on major trade routes between India and China, the Central Javanese kingdom was the most powerful Southeast Asian kingdom of its time, and the Central Javanese style is the great classical style of Indonesian art.
