Among the Museum’s holdings is a rare album created about 1899–1900 by jeweler Edgar Simpson (British, 1867–1945). Bound in tooled and gilded leather, it contains 34 pages of original designs in the Art Nouveau style. With their sinuous, plantlike forms, Simpson’s imaginative sketches for brooches, pendants, and other adornments display the essence of this influential decorative style, which grew out of the Arts and Crafts and the Aesthetic movements and reached its apogee about 1900. Our irresistible earrings are based on a delicate design in this album.
