Our striking Noh Textile Earrings are based on the intricate gold leaf pattern from a nineteenth-century surihaku
—a kimono-shaped robe patterned with metallic leaf—in the Museum’s collection. The surihaku
textile for this robe was made by applying paste through stencils and pressing gold leaf onto the still-wet paste. The artful arrangement of the stencils yielded a fluid rhythmic pattern of water, water plants, and leaves.
