Description

Among the Museums many important examples of miniature portraits is a French version titled Madame Ingouf. Painted about 1790 and signed Vincent at the lower right, it depicts a young woman in profile against a dark blue background. Dressed in a white chemise and wearing a large pendant pearl earring, she may be a relative of the engraver Francois Robert Ingouf (17471812) or of his brother, also an engraver, Pierre Charles Ingouf (born 1746, died before 1800). Our enchanting earrings are based on the earrings seen in this splendid portrait miniature.

During the eighteenth century, the portrait miniature became popular throughout Europe. Miniatures were painted on small sheets of ivory, rather than on vellum. The ivorys luminous surface allowed a freer, more expressive style and encouraged transparency and lightness of color.
