The ancient gold earrings on which our adaptations are based are Roman and date to the 1st–2nd century A.D. Earrings of this type are frequently represented in Egyptian mummy portraits of the early imperial period. They have been found in excavations in the eastern Mediterranean, Greece, and Italy, including at Pompeii, which was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79. The original earrings are fabricated of thin gold hemispheres attached to small discs and S-shaped ear wires. Five tiny granules lie at the intersection of the disk and the body of each earring.
