As fresh as when it appeared in 1978, the eye-catching shopping bag from The Metropolitan Museum of Art has become an American icon. Over one million bags are printed every year, making it one of the most visible symbols of the largest repository of art in the Western Hemisphere. Designed by Rudolph (Rudy) de Harak (American, 1924–2002), the bag was printed in three bold colors—blue, yellow, and red—to represent the basic pigments for color printing: cyan, yellow, and magenta. Its colors and type have since been adapted and used on a wide range of products, but its association with the Museum and the artist that created it is stronger than ever.
