By Maria Morris Hambourg and Jeff L. Rosenheim
Contributions by Alexandra Dennett, Philippe Garner, Adam Kirsch, Harald E. L. Prins, and Vasilios Zatse

Irving Penn (1917–2009) was among the most esteemed and influential photographers of the twentieth century. This indispensable book features one of the largest selections of Penn's photographs ever compiled—nearly 300 in all—including famous and beloved images as well as works that have never been published. Celebrating the centennial of Penn's birth, this volume spans the entirety of his nearly 70-year career.

Lively essays acquaint readers with Penn's primary subjects and campaigns, including early documentary scenes and imagery; portraits of cultural figures and celebrities; fashion; female nudes; peoples of Peru, Dahomey (Benin), New Guinea, and Morocco; and still lifes. Rounding out the book are discussions of Penn's advertising pictures and his painstaking printing processes, as well as an illustrated chronology. Irving Penn: Centennial is essential for any fan of this artists work or of the history of twentieth-century photography.

I bought this beautiful book ad a Christmas gift for my boyfriend, who is a professional photographer. He has an older book of Irving Penn’s works, but loves this version. It’s more in depth and has some photos he’s never seen before. I’m very happy with my purchase and the ease and speed with which it was delivered. Thank you so very much!

One of the most beautifully printed books I own just happens to be one of my all-time favorite photographes. If not THE ONE. I even considered buying another copy in order to cut out and frame the pages. That just wouldn't be right though.

Befitting the stature of Photographer/Artist/Documentarian Irving Penn this handsome volume is a great tribute to the great man. The reproductions (duo-tone, tri-tone and quad-tone are superb, printed in Italy on 170gsm stock are breathtaking. A fitting companion to the 1997 Art Institute of Chicago exhibition catalogue Irving Penn 'A Career in Photography'

This is one of the better books in my library. I knew Irving Penn and this book exhibits the quality and diversity of his work. Yes the book is large, but the quality of the printing and the paper were necessary to do justice to the artistry of his Photography. I will enjoy this book for years to come. Thank You for producing such a beautiful book.

I bought this at The Met a few days ago after viewing the exhibit. It is a magnificent tribute to an amazing artist. Yes, the book is heavy. So what? Put it on a table. It's worth every penny.

I purchased this catalogue because I am a profound admirer of Irving Penn for decades - - I will visit the exhibition many times. However, the book is so heavy that I am literally at a loss as to how to peruse it. There is no way I can hold it in my hands or in my lap. I can put it on the dining room table to commune with it but will never be able to pull it out of the book shelves to it with it for a few minutes. I have a catalog of the 1980 Met exhibition with only 156 plates. I'll look for other small catalogues.
