This boxed edition features facsimiles of the celebrated Cloisters Playing Cards, the only known complete deck of fifteenth-century hand-painted playing cards. There are four suits, each with a king, a queen, a knave, and ten pip cards. The suit symbols are based on the hunt, while the value of the pip cards is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the suit symbol. The figures, which recall Franco-Flemish models, were drawn with a bold, free hand; they wear exaggerated costumes suggesting a lampoon of extravagant Burgundian court fashions. It is not known how this deck was originally played, though almost all card games involved some form of gambling.
