Agnolo Bronzino (Florentine, 1503–1572) was a leading painter of mid-sixteenth-century Florence, and was influenced by Michelangelo, like many of the artists from his generation. The detail on which our holiday card is based was taken from the oil painting Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist and a Female Saint, probably Saint Ann
, completed around 1540–50. In this this joyful and carefully designed painting, the Christ Child removes a garland of flowers from his head and leans toward his mother as if to embrace her. Greeting: Christmas Greetings.
