Description

Description

This bright, wintry image reproduces a woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 17971858) from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Kinryusan Sensoji, the famous temple at Asakusa dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon, was the most popular venerable Buddhist temple in Edo. In this print, the white snow is complemented by the red of the temple's buildings, the gate, the lantern, and even the label signed "painted by Hiroshige" in the lower right corner. This auspicious color scheme of red and white creates a celebratory mood.
