Description

The Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crche at The Metropolitan Museum of Art are a long-established yuletide tradition in New York. The magnificent blue spruce with a collection of eighteenth-century Neapolitan angels and cherubs among its boughs and groups of realistic crche figures flanking the Nativity scene at its base annually delights holiday visitors in the Museums Medieval Sculpture Hall. Our holiday cards depict the Nativity, with the holy family in the center, flanked by animals, angels, and cherubs in a classically decorated setting. Greeting: "When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy." Matthew 2:10

20 cards and 20 envelopes per box. 6 1/4'' x 4 7/8''.

  • 20 cards and 20 envelopes per box
  • 6 1/4'' x 4 7/8''
  • Greeting: "When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy."Matthew 2:10

Art History

The annual Christmas display is the result of the generosity, enthusiasm, and dedication of the late Loretta Hines Howard, who began collecting crche figures in 1925 and soon after conceived the idea of combining the Roman Catholic custom of elaborate Nativity scenes with the tradition of decorated Christmas trees that had developed among the largely Protestant people of Northern Europe. More than two hundred eighteenth-century Neapolitan crche figures were given to the Museum by Howard starting in 1964, and have been displayed each holiday season for more than forty years. Glowing with light, the towering tree is adorned with cherubs and some fifty gracefully suspended angels.
