Our enchanting ornament is based on a superb fauteuil en cabriolet
, or armchair with cabriole legs, made in France about 1750–60. One of a set of four in the Museum’s collection, its frame consists of carved and gilded beechwood, with modern green broché. The chair’s small scale and curvilinear woodwork are in keeping with the fanciful Rococo style popular at mid-century; in particular, the cabriole leg is associated with furniture made during Louis XV’s reign from 1715 to 1774.
