Description

Description

The evergreen Olea europaea, or common olive, is among the more than 300 species of plants at The Cloisters museum and gardens. As it does today, this prominent staple of Mediterranean life provided medieval people with oil for cooking and fruit for consumption; the leaves were used to treat maladies such as high fevers. To suit New York City's climate, the olive trees at The Cloisters grow in terracotta pots in the Bonnefont Herb Garden in summer and are moved to the arcaded walkway of the Cuxa Cloister in winter. This practice was common in northern European gardens throughout the late Middle Ages.
