Description

For Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 18531890), oleanders were joyous life-affirming flowers that bloomed riotously and were continually renewing themselves. This candle, created expressly for the Museum by one of the worlds oldest candle manufacturers, founded in France in 1734, captures the exuberant colors and subtle fragrances of Van Goghs best-loved bloom. Made by hand in Normandy, this candle is packaged in a gift box that features an image of Oleanders (1888), while the glass holder displays a quote by Van Gogh: If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.

Natural wax with oleander scent. Made in France. 3 1/2''H; 2'' diam. 45-hour burn time. 6.7 oz.

Art History

In Vincent van Goghs Oleanders painting (1888) in the Museums collection, the flowers fill a majolica jug that the artist used for other still lifes made in Arles. They are symbolically juxtaposed with a copy of mile Zolas 1884 novel La joie de vivre. Van Gogh is best known for his vibrant paintings; but behind his bold use of color is an equally inspired sense of line, perspective, and structure. Largely self-taught, he gained his footing as an artist by copying prints and studying nineteenth-century drawing manuals and lesson books.
