Description

Scenes of still lifes of flowers were among Vincent van Goghs (Dutch, 18531890) most frequent themes, as in his Roses painting of 1890. This candle, created expressly for the Museum by one of the worlds oldest candle manufacturers, founded in France in 1734, captures the exuberant colors and subtle fragrances of Van Goghs well-loved bloom. Made by hand in Normandy, this candle is packaged in a gift box that features an image of Roses, while the glass holder displays a quote by Van Gogh: If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.

Art History

In May 1890, just before his departure from the asylum in Saint-Rmy, Van Gogh painted an exceptional group of four still lifes, to which the Museums Roses belong. Striking in their facility of execution and elegant simplicity of design, these bouquets and their counterparts were conceived as a decorative ensemble, like the suite of sunflowers he had made earlier in Arles. Van Gogh is best known for his vibrant paintings; but behind his bold use of color is an equally inspired sense of line, perspective, and structure. Largely self-taught, he gained his footing as an artist by copying prints and studying nineteenth-century drawing manuals and lesson books.
