Description

By Douglas Eklund

The Pictures Generation is representational of a loosely knit group of artists working in New York from the mid-70s to the mid-80s, which included Robert Longo, Richard Prince, David Salle, and Cindy Sherman to name a few. Collectively, they focused on the concept of imagery itselfhow pictures not only depict but also shape perceptions of ourselves and the world. At this time, mass media and consumer culture was immersing itself into society, and the Pictures Generation sought to address the rhetorical and psychological functions of the image across all media (photography, painting and sculpture, drawings and prints, film and video, and music and performance). Eklunds The Pictures Generation, 19741984 delves into the achievements of these artists as a whole and how they made an impact on contemporary art.

352 pages, 333 illustrations (286 in full color, 47 black- and-white). 8 1/2'' x 11 1/4''. Hardcover (clothbound, with jacket).
