Spherical pendants, made of semiprecious stones and bound in gold and silver, were worn in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, presumably as amulets to protect the wearer. In the Metropolitan Museum's collection of Medieval Art is one such pendant, a rare, gold-mounted sphere made from rock crystal. A transparent, hard, colorless stone that occurs naturally around the world, rock crystal consists of pure quartz in large crystals that lend it a glittering effect. The material is often associated with magical properties; early Christians, for instance, believed that rock crystal guaranteed a hearing of their prayers for anyone holding it.

Rock crystal was widely used throughout Europe in the Middle Ages for a variety of objects. Though similar rock crystal pendants have been found in Merovingian and Anglo- Saxon graves, the distinctive granulation pattern on the gold band of the Museum's example suggests it might have been made by a Hunnic artist. The Huns were a nomadic people with origins in eastern Central Asia, who invaded Central and Eastern Europe about 400.
