These distinctive earrings were inspired by two gold Etruscan fibulae, or safety pins, with glass paste bows, housed in the Met's collection of Greek and Roman art. These rare Etruscan treasures were originally made in the late eighthearly seventh century B.C. in the region of Italy now known as Tuscany. Glass was a precious commodity in archaic Italy, and the Met's fibulae, the only ones known to employ gold, must have significantly enhanced their owner's status.
