Suggesting the richness of classical Javanese jewelry, this singular pendant is modeled on an original Central Javanese adornment in The Met collection, which dates from the eighth to the tenth century.
In this powerful Southeast Asian kingdom, lustrous gold was fashioned by goldsmiths into personal adornments worn on the body; made into ritual objects; and traded in commerce. Both Javanese royalty and commoners probably wore gleaming gold jewelry. Though the meaning of many of the ancient motifs remain obscure to us today, their intrigue is unmistakable.
