Our floral-patterned jewelry roll is based on Courtiers in a Rose Garden: A Lady and Two Gentlemen, a sumptuous wool and silk tapestry (1440–50) in the Museum’s collection. Originally woven in the southern Netherlands, it belongs to a series of tapestries designed to cover the walls of an entire room. The set was possibly made for the French king Charles VII, whose colors were white, red, and green, and one of whose emblems was the rose tree. A royal connection for such luxurious tapestries is certainly likely.
