Of all the plants that “deck the halls” at The Cloisters, holly (Ilex aquifolium
) and ivy (Hedera helix
) are arguably the most beautiful and the most significant. In pagan tradition these plants had been invested with extraordinary powers, but by the Middle Ages, holly and ivy had been thoroughly Christianized. Ivy was identified with the Virgin, and the red berries of the holly with the blood of Christ; holly in particular was associated with the medieval winter feast. Our festive necklace is adapted from elegant Christmas decorations seen at The Cloisters.
