Our ornate Scrolling Vine Pierced Cuff, crafted of 24K gold overlay, is based on the scrolling ornament on a pair of nineteenth-century cast-iron elevator grilles in the Museum’s American Wing. Designed by architect William LeBaron Jenney (American, 1832–1907), the elevator grilles were part of the Manhattan Building—a skyscraper built in Chicago between utilizing Jenney’s innovative steel skeleton frame design. It is the oldest surviving skyscraper with this type of supporting structure.
