Our notebook features a detail of Dancers, Pink and Green in The Met's collection, which was painted about 1890 by Edgard Degas (French, 18341917). Though he preferred to think of himself as a "realist" or "independent" rather than an Impressionist, Edgar Degas played an important role in the movement. Rather than attempt to capture the ephemeral qualities of light in natural landscapes, like many of his contemporaries, Degas was interested in depicting the interior views of modern life, those fleeting moments artificially illuminated in cafs, theaters, and dressing rooms.
